Federal funds to help water projects across California
district’s water delivery system near the All-American and East Highline canals. Its primary purpose is to maximize the district’s water management efficiency within the Imperial Valley. The reservoir project would boost capacity by 365,000 acre-feet of water annually. “This is a critical project for the dis- trict,” said IID Board President Alex Cardenas. “Once complete, this reser- voir will assist the district’s water op- erational needs, help our water team accommodate additional water-us- er flexibility and facilitate significant
system and on-farm conservation.” For the federal Klamath Water Project in Northern California, $5 million will go to fund a study on the expansion and upgrades to the Klamath A Canal, and al- most $4 million will be used to upgrade the Klamath C Canal. The legislation also carves out funding for small surface and groundwater storage projects that would benefit the state. These include funds to increase water efficiency in the Colorado River Basin, for the Kern Fan groundwater storage project and the Del Puerto Water District recharge project.
Millions in federal funding are on the way to advance infrastructure repairs on water delivery systems throughout the West, including key projects across California. Nearly $585 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is targeted at projects that improve water conveyance and stor- age, increase safety, improve hydropower generation and provide water treatment. Infrastructure projects that stand to benefit are found in the major river ba- sins and regions where the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation operates. Funding goes to 83 projects in 11 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota and Washington. In California, funding has been desig- nated for upgrades throughout the Central Valley Project, a network of dams, reser- voirs, canals and other facilities that ex- tends for several hundred miles through the state. Funds include: $25 million to correct subsidence along the Delta-Mendota Canal; $25 million to refurbish the Delta- Mendota Canal Jones pumping plant; $22.2 million in fixes to increase capacity of the Friant-Kern Canal; $25 million in upgrades at Shasta Dam; $21 million in upgrades of Folsom Dam; and $10 million to modernize Nimbus Fish Hatchery. The San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority said advancing the Delta- Mendota Canal subsidence correction project is expected to restore an estimated 20% of conveyance capacity that has been lost due to subsidence along the canal. “The rainfall that California has expe- rienced this year, after two years of in- credibly dry conditions, reinforces how important the maintenance of our wa- ter conveyance systems is to long-term drought resilience,” Federico Barajas, executive director of the San Luis & Delta-Mendota Water Authority, said in
a statement. “Our ability to convey and store water in times of plenty for use in times of scarcity is a critical component of improving long-term water resilience for Authority members.” Imperial Irrigation District was award- ed $9.5 million in grant funding for fis- cal year 2023 for its upstream reservoir storage project, located upstream of the
