Sit back and enjoy food, topics and trends that start on California farms and ranches. take 5
The residents of the other 49 states can thank California for many of the foods they regularly enjoy. The Golden State accounts for between 95% and 100% of the nation’s commercial production of several different fruits, vegetables and nuts. This includes some crops that are coming into season right about now. Here are five of them. (or almost only) Only in California
Almonds 1.
Almonds have become a staple in the American diet. They are chopped or slivered and added to salads, cereal, fruit or desserts. Finely ground, they become rich and tasty butter, great for spreading on crackers or toast. They also can be made into baking flour or a beverage. Roasted and salted or raw, a few nuts make a satisfying snack. Go ahead and indulge: Research shows that consuming a few almonds each day can help cut the risks of heart disease, diabetes, cancer and osteoporosis.
Prunes 2.
California grows 99% of the nation’s prunes. These dried high- sugar plums can be eaten straight like candy or used in cooking. The sweet and tangy fruit works well in muffins, breakfast breads and desserts. They’re also incorporated into dinner entrées that call for sweetening, such as teriyaki bowls, pulled pork, meatballs and baked beans, and they can balance saltiness in savory dishes. They’re packed with vitamins and minerals, are famously good for digestion and can improve bone health.
