Cal/OSHA issues guidance to cope with N95 shortages

ByKevinHecteman Facedwitha severe shortageofN95 res- pirators amid a pandemic and a record wildfire season, the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health has released temporary guidance for agricul- tural employers. Under this guidance, agricultural em- ployerswhoneedemployees toworkout- doors on smoky days will be allowed cer- tainexceptions if theyareunable tosecure enough N95 masks, also called filtering face piece respirators. State regulations require employers to provide such respi- rators and encourage their use when the airquality index reachesat least 151due to wildfire smokewithpollutantsmeasuring 2.5micrometers or smaller, calledPM2.5. The temporary guidance permits use of N95 respirators that have exceeded their shelf life, provided they were stored ac- cording to the maker’s specifications; al- lowsanemployee toreuseanN95 formore thanone shift if it’s still in satisfactory con- dition; andallowsuseofother reusableres- pirators certified by the National Institute of Occupational Safety andHealth. Thestateagency saiduseof foreign-cer- tifiedrespirators, suchasChinese-certified KN95s, will be allowed if the employer triedtoobtainNIOSH-certifiedrespirators
