As fall rolls around, it’s time to take a hard look at the weeds in your orchard or vineyard. There is a wide variety of problem weeds that have become particularly challenging. Marestail and fleabane top the list of prob- lematic weeds for many growers. Nutsedge is also becoming a problem in young and estab- lished vineyards. There is a full array of new chemistries avail- able that are very good for problem weeds such as marestail and fleabane that prevent germination. Fall is a good time to burn off weeds so the orchard or vineyard is ready to lay down a pre-emergent. The way pre-emergents work is they only go about an inch into the soil, where they create barriers for weeds to germinate. It’s important that once the barrier is in place, it isn’t disturbed because, if it is, the weeds will break through. Pre-emergents break down through moisture,
so they need to be incorporated into the soil with a quarter inch of rain about 14 days after applica- tion. There are some products that have a three- week window for incorporation. The efficacy of the pre-emergent starts to de- grade if it isn’t incorporated within that win- dow. It can be irrigated in. But most vineyards and a lot of orchards use drip or microsprin- klers. Drip irrigation waters only a small area, and most of the problematic weeds are outside that area. So it’s important to try to capture a rain event when possible. Rain is the best way to incorporate a pre-emer- gent because it falls straight down and covers the complete area more uniformly than irriga- tion. A quarter inch of rain is ideal for incorpo- rating a pre-emergent, but too much rain could wash away the chemistry. Roundup-resistant weeds have become a problem in recent years, so it’s important to rotate herbicides and pre-emergent herbicides.
