because the parched ground soaked it up quickly, Aegerter said. In some other parts of the state that re- ceived significantly more rain, she said she heard reports of pumpkins beginning to rot in the field. Because the squash sits on the ground, prolonged soil wetness can create prime conditions for mold and bacterial rots. Perry & Sons grows a wide variety of pumpkins, but Perry said their bread and butter remain the orange jack-o’-lantern carving-type. “Small, medium and the larger ones— they’re big, big movers,” he said. Kristen Noble, vegetable product man- ager for Harris Seeds, said she’s seen sim- ilar sales breakdowns. The company sells to commercial producers and home gar- deners nationwide. “I’ve been in the industry for five years, and our primary business is still the orange jack-o’-lanterns,” said Noble, who’s based in Rochester, New York. “But even in those five years, we defi- nitely have seen growth in the specialty pumpkins. It started out with some of the whites getting a lot of attention and then the warty ones. “People are going out to get the jack-o’- lanterns, and they’re coming home with the jack-o’-lanterns and the decorative

ones, too,” she said. Of the decorative pumpkins, Noble said whites remain the most popular, whether the small minis or the flat “stackers.” As a result, she said, some plant breed- ers are working to develop white jack-o’- lanterns. More recently, Noble has seen an uptick in sales of seed to grow yellow
and multi-colored pumpkins. Like Noble, Perry said he has wit- nessed expansion of the decorative cat- egory, beginning with mini-pumpkins in the early 1990s. About 10 years later, autumn-colored heirloom pumpkins— ranging from tans to jades to pinks and rusts—hit the market, and they’ve con- tinued to trend upward. “Those autumn-colored (pumpkins) have become really, really big, and I enjoy them myself,” he said. “When I first start- ed out, I didn’t think they would be much, but they’ve become really popular.” Knucklehead, a medium-sized orange variety covered in warts, also has gained a loyal following.
In addition, Perry & Sons handles gourds, ornamental corn and corn stalks, all of which enjoy strong de- mand as consumers decorate for fall and celebrate the first big holiday of the season—Halloween. “I think it’s getting bigger and bigger every year,” Perry said. “That goes along with the mini-pumpkins—the white minis, the orange minis, a lot of the gourds, the mini corn and the corn stalks for decoration. “It seems like every store you go into in the fall, you’ll see some type of dis- play somewhere.” (Vicky Boyd is a reporter based in Modesto.
