Oh, the aroma of a pot of soup or stew simmering on the stove. California farms and ranches provide all the ingredients you’ll need for a delicious bowl of warmth, including meats, vegetables and herbs. 3. Soups and stews

4. Root vegetables

Slow-roasting root vegetables creates a hearty side dish that’s also filling enough to be a meal on its own. Cut up chunks of your favorites, such as sweet potatoes, parsnips, beets, turnips, carrots and rutabagas, then sprinkle with salt, pepper and herbs, and toss with olive oil. Roast in a hot oven for the sweet and savory flavors to blend.

5. Hot toddy

You’re probably not going to find a Saint Bernard with a barrel around its neck to bring you brandy, but you can sit around a warm fire and sip the distilled spirit—which is made from grapes or other fermented fruit. For a classic hot toddy, mix 1 1/2 ounces of brandy with 1 tablespoon honey, 1/2 ounce of lemon juice and 1 cup of hot water.
