Livestock producers can apply for pandemic relief

Livestock and poultry farmers who suf- fered losses during the pandemic due to insufficient access toprocessingmay apply forassistancefor thoselossesandthecostof depopulationanddisposal of theanimals. The 2021 Consolidated Appropriations Act authorized payments to farmers for losses of livestock or poultry depopulat- ed fromMarch 1 through Dec. 26, 2020. Part of theU.S. Department of Agriculture PandemicAssistance for Producers initia- tive, the Pandemic Livestock Indemnity Programmakes payments based on 80% of the fairmarket valueof the livestockand poultry and for the cost of depopulation and disposal of the animal. Eligible livestock and poultry include swine, chickens and turkeys, but pork producers are expected to be the primary recipients of the assistance, according to USDA. Packers, live poultry dealers and contract growers are not eligible. Applicationswillbeacceptedthroughthe USDAFarmServiceAgencyuntil Sept. 17. USDA previously proposed pandemic assistance using flat rates, which the de- partment said does not take into account thedifferent levels of harmfelt bydifferent farmers.
