State awards $5 million for water efficiency assistance

CDFA accepted applications for the grant program from late November 2021 through Feb. 3. Resource conser- vation districts, nonprofit organiza- tions, the University of California and California State University systems, California community colleges, and state and federally recognized tribes were eligible to apply for up to $500,000 to provide technical assistance. Eleven recipients have been award- ed $5 mi l l ion in funding through California’s Water Efficiency Technical Assistance program. Thecompetitivegrantswereawardedby the stateOfficeof Environmental Farming andInnovation, adivisionof theCalifornia Department of Food andAgriculture. “Many of these organizations are already essential resources in serving California growers with their on-farm irrigation use efficiency projects,” said CDFA secretary Karen Ross. “This pro- gram will expand the reach of these or- ganizations at a time when water-use efficiency and nutrient management are so important to agricultural resilience.” The grants were provided for in the 2021 California state budget to support water efficiency and nutrient manage- ment forCalifornia farmers and ranchers. The grant recipients include: • The Coal i t ion for Urban/Rural Environmental Stewardship, which re- ceived $500,000 to create a simplified macro-irrigation system, software and training program for managing crops in the Central Valley. • University of California Cooperative E x t e n s i on a nd Ca l i f o r n i a S t a t e University, Fresno, Center for Irrigation Technology, which received $499,957.25 for on-farm irrigation and pump effi- ciency training for small farms in Fresno and Tulare counties. •UCDavis,which received$499,935.85 for water efficiency and technical as- sistance funding for a Nursery and Floriculture Alliance project to provide water and nutrient training for socially disadvantaged farmers in nursery and greenhouse operations. • Sutter and Yolo counties resource conservation districts, which received $499,808.40 to provide agricultural irri- gation conservation services for growers inYolo, Sutter, Yuba andColusa counties. • Th e Re s ou r c e Con s e r v a t i on D i s t r i c t o f S a n t a C r u z Co un t y , UCCE and the Monterey Resource Conservation District, which received $499,787.87 for outreach and training tools for growers and irrigators in the Pajaro Valley and nearby Central Coast farming communities. • The Resource Conservation District of Monterey County and the Agriculture and Land-based Training Association, which received $498,824.62 for assisting small-scale, Spanish-speaking farmers in Monterey County and nearby areas with water efficiency. • The East Merced and East Stanislaus resource conservation districts, which received $496,828.50 to create a mobile irrigation lab program providing land- owners and farmers in Merced, Madera and Stanislaus counties with irrigation, nutrient and groundwater data. • The Center for Irrigation Technology a t F re sno S t a t e , wh i ch re c e i ved $460,415.80 to develop awater efficiency
