OK, this one’s probably not that scary—unless you’re a severe arachnophobe, in which case the mere mention of “spider plant” might give you the willies. It gets that name from its spiderettes, or small offshoots that dangle from the main plant at bloom time in the manner of certain eight-legged creatures. Those with brown thumbs will find that this plant is frighteningly easy to grow and take care of. 3 . Spider plant Web of lies
4 . Brain cactus Braaaaains!
If you’re a vegetarian zombie, this is probably your plant. The brain cactus, of course, gets its name from its cerebral appearance—which, according to UC Master Gardeners, comes from a mutation that causes the plant’s pads to twist. Without that mutation, the cactus would grow straight. It’s native to central Mexico and has become a popular houseplant.
5 . Venus flytrap Botanical pest control
Want a cool way to deal with buzzy insects in the house? Forget the swatter and get yourself a Venus flytrap. This carnivorous plant, native to the Carolinas, will sit on the table, jaws wide open, waiting for its prey—your basic housefly or any other insect—to land on it, whereupon the jaws snap shut and dinner is served.
